Funding
Opportunity was self funded using director Rusty Rehl’s Idaho National Guard bonus and the money he had saved for a house down payment after being unable to qualify for a mortgage. With no safety net, Rehl turned the future he could not buy into the budget for his first feature, writing, directing, and editing the film himself. The film’s creation mirrors its story, a working class struggle to build something meaningful when the system offers no easy path.

Guerrilla Filmmaking
Our approach to making “Opportunity” was grounded in guerrilla filmmaking techniques. We embraced the raw, unfiltered energy of shooting on location with minimal equipment. This method allowed us to authentically capture the gritty reality of Patrick’s world. From cramped van interiors to the bustling city streets, every scene was crafted with an eye for realism and emotional depth.

Dedicated Cast and Crew
Despite our low budget, we were fortunate to work with an incredibly dedicated cast and crew. Our actors brought their characters to life with performances that were both nuanced and powerful. The chemistry between our leads, especially the dynamic duo of Patrick and Donnie, was electric and genuine. Behind the scenes, our crew worked tirelessly, often wearing multiple hats, to ensure every shot was perfect.

Challenges and Triumphs
Making “Opportunity” was not without its challenges. Budget constraints meant we had to be resourceful, often finding creative solutions to unforeseen problems. However, these challenges only fueled our determination. Each obstacle overcame was a testament to our team’s ingenuity and dedication. From securing locations to managing tight shooting schedules, every step of the journey was a triumph in its own right.

Capturing Authenticity
A key element of “Opportunity” was capturing the authentic experiences of those struggling with housing instability. To do this, we conducted extensive research and consulted with individuals who had firsthand experience living in their vehicles. Their stories and insights were invaluable, helping us portray Patrick’s journey with honesty and sensitivity.

Music and Sound Design
The film’s music and sound design play a crucial role in setting the tone and enhancing the emotional impact of the story. We collaborated with talented musicians and sound designers to create a score that resonates with the themes of hope, desperation, and determination. Each musical piece was carefully selected to reflect Patrick’s emotional journey.

Community Support
“Opportunity” would not have been possible without the support of our community. From local businesses providing locations and resources to volunteers helping on set, the outpouring of support was overwhelming. This film is a testament to what can be achieved when a community comes together to support a shared vision.
Conclusion
The making of “Opportunity” was a journey filled with passion, creativity, and unwavering commitment. We set out to tell a story that resonates with anyone who has ever faced insurmountable odds, and we believe we have achieved that. We are immensely proud of what we have created and excited to share it with the world. Thank you for joining us on this incredible journey.
